These Tuscan Medallions were illustrated back in 1858. I thought it would be fun to make a Fathers Day card with or to use to create an award.  Perhaps a background on paper too, you decide!

Dr.Lucian Warner was a physician in the late 19th century. He ended up giving up his practice to lecture people about women's health issues, specifically the corset. He gave lectures on the harmful effects of the steel boned corset. But his lectures gave no effect. So he decided to design a corset in 1873 that gave the "perfect" shape and had the flexibility to prevent injuries by allowing more movement. Then in 1874 Dr.Warner and his brother Dr. Ira De Ver quit their medical jobs and founded the Warner Brother's Corset Company. The corsets they produced were called Dr.Warners Coraline Health Corsets. The corsets were made with pieces of Coraline and were laced or clasped together. They also added shoulder straps for support.

Wow a man who wanted to end bras...go Dr. Warner! To this day we still insist on wearing these horrible contraptions.  With the invention of the Coraline Corset
the Warner brothers became millionaires and they retired in 1894.

Or Maybe You like just the Corset?

Vintage Handfan:Free Image

9/16/2014

Ladies hand fans were used for more than just chasing away the vapors and fainting spells. Ladies had an entire form of communication that they could convey just by the positioning of the fan in court. OR DID THEY? It has been said that in the courts of England, Spain and elsewhere fans were used in a more or less secret, unspoken code of messages. These fan languages were a way to cope with the restricting social etiquette. However, modern research has proved that this was a marketing ploy developed in the 18th century (FANA Journal, spring 2004, Fact & Fiction about the language of the fan by J.P. Ryan) - one that has kept its appeal remarkably over the succeeding centuries.
