Roland Cashel Image: Free Image & Ebook

8/23/2014

Charles Lever; an Irish author, began writing the book "Roland Cashel" in 1850 and it published out of London in and around 1858. Now I know it is very unusual of me to go into this much detail but Charles Lever the author was considered an absolute joy in the parlor because of his stories and I found great joy in his jubilant writing. I have found for you a wonderful free Ebook copy of the story below that shows some of the images done by Phiz. Note this image I bring you today is a copy of the inner right cover page of the original London book from whence this delightful illustration comes. The reason it looks very grey is the actual print is a rectangular plate that has horizontal lines going through the the entire image with the book title and such; read on for reasons why. You can see that below. I took the best part of the image out for you.

Now the interesting story of our Illustrator Phiz. Hablot Knight Browne (12 July 1815 – 8 July 1882) was an English artist, famous as Phiz, illustrator of books by Charles Dikens, Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth.
Most of Browne's "Phiz's" work was etched on steel plates because these yielded a far larger edition than copper. Phiz was annoyed at some of his etchings being transferred to stone by the publishers and printed as lithographic reproductions. Partly with the view to prevent this treatment of his work, he employed a machine to rule a series of lines over the plate in order to obtain what appeared to be a tint; when manipulated with acid this tint gave an effect somewhat resembling mezzotint, which at that time it was found practically impossible to transfer to stone.  You can see that in the original image above left. How is that for pre-copyright infringement protection!
E-Book
Roland Cashel By: Charles Lever Illustrations by Phiz. Although this is a copy of the reprint version printed in Boston 1907, It still shows some of the adorable illustrations done by Phiz that have a witty charm to them. The book is worth a peruse because it has wonderful humor and charm.  This free e-book comes to you from PROJECT GUTENBERG www.gutenberg.org

1634 Wood Block Images: Free Image

8/21/2014

I am pulling these wonderful images out of an ancient text from 1634. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of it off hand because as usual my ADD had me wandering off on other projects for several months till I was going through my files to decide what to share with you. I marked the Image from the year it was from and I briefly remember pulling it from the text and cleaning it up for later. On the life of me till I go back through the texts again I wont remember the name as I have many to go through. Anyway do enjoy this wonderful image. I thought it would be incredible for upcoming Halloween projects. eventually I will post more images from this wonderful book. Stay tuned, come back often as I try to post at least two free images daily. Please share the projects you use this for by uploading for our DIY page. Use the contact page. Thanks!

Acorn Stove Ad

7/27/2014

Date published was 1886. The card was an Acorn cut out with an adorable little girl holding a puppy on one side and a wood engraving by Hiram Ferguson on the other side which pictured the Acorn stove.  Since the name plate is blank this would make a cute tag, or fall project piece. Please share your projects we would like to see!
